China manufacturing growth in January weak

BEIJING (AP) ? China's manufacturing activity expanded in January in a new sign of recovery for the world's second-largest economy but growth was weak, two surveys showed Friday.

The government-sanctioned China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said its purchasing managers' index stood at 50.4 on a 100-point scale on which numbers above 50 indicate an expansion. Separately, HSBC Corp. said its PMI stood at 52.3 on a similar 100-point scale.

"We see increasing signals of a sustained growth recovery in the coming months," said HSBC economist Hongbin Qu in a statement.

China's economic growth rebounded from a three-year low to 7.9 percent in the three months ending in December. Analysts warn, though, that it could face a setback if trade or investment growth weakens.

In a reflection of the shaky state of China's recovery, the logistics group's index showed a small decline from December's 50.6 level.

HSBC said its PMI showed a steady expansion of activity from December's 51.5 reading. Companies responding to the survey said orders "increased at a solid pace" and new exports rose following a reduction in December.

The latest Chinese data add to signs of possible improvement in other major global economies.

The European Union's main economic sentiment indicator rose in January for a third month for the 17 countries that use the euro. Japan's government reported this week that December industrial production picked up in in a sign the world's third-largest economy may be stabilizing.

China's manufacturing uptick is a positive sign for trading partners that supply its factories with components and commodities ranging from iron ore to rubber.

The country's economic slowdown was largely the result of government controls imposed to cool inflation and surging housing prices. The slump deepened when global trade weakened unexpectedly.

Many forecasters expect China's rebound to peak in coming months before settling back to deliver growth of about 8 percent for the year. That is below the double-digit rates of the past decade but in line with communist leaders' desire for slower, more sustainable growth driven by domestic consumption instead of exports and investment.

Budweiser's Blocked Corona Deal Is Partly About Craft Brews, Internal Documents Reveal

The craft beer industry only accounts for about 5 percent of the $80 billion U.S. beer market -- peanuts compared to AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser and other beers, which commands a 39 percent share of that market.

But Goliath is very, very scared of David. The number of U.S. craft brewers jumped from 537 in 1994 to more than 2,000 as of July 2012, according to The Brewers Association, a national trade group. Meanwhile, Budweiser shipments in the U.S. declined 13 percent from 2009 to 2011, according to Beer Marketer?s Insights, a trade publication, and sales of Budweiser to U.S. retailers in the first nine months of 2012 fell by 6 percent in volume, Bloomberg reported.

The increasing popularity of craft beer was a major factor in AB InBev's decision to buy rival Grupo Modelo, Corona's parent company, according to internal documents from AB InBev released Thursday by the Justice Department, which sued to block the $21 billion purchase.

?We must slow the volume trend of High End Segment and cannot let the industry transform,? AB InBev said in internal strategy documents obtained by the Justice Department, referring to the threat posed by imports and craft beers.

In opposing the Modelo deal, the Justice Department argued that AB InBev's acquisition would serve to stifle competition in the U.S. beer market and lead to price increases. As a combined company, AB InBev and Modelo would command 46 percent of U.S. beer sales, the lawsuit said.

AB InBev said in a statement that it would ?vigorously contest? the lawsuit. ?The U.S. Department of Justice?s action seeking to block the proposed combination between AB InBev and Grupo Modelo is inconsistent with the law, the facts and the reality of the marketplace,? the statement said.

But the suit came as welcome news to some independent craft brewers, who feared the Modelo deal would enhance AB InBev's ability to pressure independent beer distributors to stop selling rival brands and craft beers.

Post-Prohibition era rules ban brewers in 38 states from distributing their own beers to retailers. As a result, a middle tier of roughly 3,000 independent distributors nationwide has emerged. Distributors provide transportation and storage for beer from the time it leaves a brewer until it arrives at a retailer such as a bar, restaurant or convenience store.

Steve Beauchesne, the owner of Ontario-based Beau?s All Natural Brewing Company, a 65-employee outfit that makes Bog Water Gruit Ale and Doc's Feet Dubbel, told HuffPost that his brewery only has access to one nearby wholesaler, and he fears that giants like AB InBev and MillerCoors will work to keep his product off delivery trucks.

?The size of the global beer companies right now is so ridiculous that it?s already gone beyond the point of making a difference whether one gets absorbed by another,? said Beauchesne. "They outspend us, they block entire markets, they do everything to keep us off tap."

Other craft brewers told HuffPost that while distribution was a cause for concern, they're not really worried about AB InBev encroaching on their turf.

"They don?t understand craft beer," said Fal Allen, the brewmaster at Anderson Valley Brewing Company in Boonville, Calif., who pointed to AB InBev's purchase of the craft brewery Goose Island in 2011 for $39 million. "They don't know how to market it," he added, "so instead of making craft beer, they?re now buying up companies who do."

Black ex-coaches say NFL's Rooney Rule is broken

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Three black former NFL head coaches say the league needs to rethink its Rooney Rule for promoting minority hiring after 15 top vacancies ? eight head coaching jobs and seven general manager positions ? were all filled by white candidates since the regular season ended a month ago.

"I know the concept is good and something we need to do," said Tony Dungy, who was with the Indianapolis Colts during the 2006 season when he became the first black coach to win a Super Bowl. "Obviously, it's not working the way it should."

The Rooney Rule, implemented in 2003, was named for Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, who steadfastly pushed the league to require every team to interview at least one minority candidate every time there is a coaching or general manager opening.

Before the rule went into effect, the NFL had had only six minority head coaches in more than 80 years. Since it has been in place, 12 have been hired.

But none were hired this year to replace the two black coaches who were fired ? Romeo Crennel in Kansas City and Lovie Smith in Chicago ? and the one fired black GM, Rod Graves in Arizona.

Herm Edwards, former coach of the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs and now an ESPN analyst, has called for not only revising the rule but perhaps even changing its name.

"When you use the Rooney Rule and not correctly, you put a little bit of a bad mark on Mr. Rooney's name, and that is not good," Edwards said Wednesday. "If it keeps going this way, we might need to take his name off the rule. It is not being used in the right manner that Mr. Rooney meant it to be."

Robert Gulliver, the NFL's executive vice president of human resources, said that the hiring results were "disappointing" and that he expects to make revisions in the rule.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance, a group of minority coaches and front-office, scouting and game-day NFL officials, wants the Rooney Rule expanded to apply to coordinators, assistant head coaches and club president positions.

Unlike Dungy and Edwards, Jim Caldwell is still coaching, albeit as an assistant. Not only that, his team, the Baltimore Ravens, will play the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday's Super Bowl. But he wasn't even invited to interview for one of the eight vacant coaching jobs, though having a team in the playoffs can be a hindrance to such opportunities.

Fired as the Colts' coach following the 2011 season, Caldwell joined the Ravens as quarterbacks coach. When head coach John Harbaugh fired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron in December, Caldwell was promoted. With his guidance, Baltimore's offense responded.

Caldwell is no stranger to the Super Bowl, having led the Colts there three years ago after replacing the retired Dungy. It was only after Peyton Manning was sidelined for the 2011 season that Caldwell was fired.

"It has been a great rule and it has worked in the past," he said. "Just like anything else, you have to, after a certain period of time, revisit it and take a look and see if it needs a little tweaking. I think it does in this particular case."

Caldwell added: "That's one of the reasons that the Rooney Rule was put in place, because you're trying to avoid those situations, if possible. We're at that stage where guys like Lovie Smith, who didn't get an opportunity, who had won and been very successful previously ... obviously, there's some concern there, and that's why I think the rule is going to be revisited."

Dungy said he believes the entire system is broken. He cited 21 head coaching jobs changing in a three-year span, which he said indicates owners are making the wrong hires regardless of race.

Edwards said he wonders whether minority candidates get interviewed only to satisfy the rule, even though they have no chance of getting the job. He and Dungy noted that the last black head coach hiring ? other than coaches promoted from within, like Leslie Frazier, Raheem Morris, Mike Singletary, Hue Jackson and Crennel ? was Mike Tomlin by Pittsburgh, in 2007.

There are currently four minority head coaches: Tomlin, Frazier in Minnesota, Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati and Ron Rivera in Carolina. Minority general managers include Baltimore's Ozzie Newsome, Detroit's Martin Mayhew, Houston's Rick Smith, the New York Giants' Jerry Reese and Oakland's Reggie McKenzie.

"I am not saying you have to hire a minority candidate. No one is saying that," Edwards said. "I am saying you can't be blinded. It can't be, 'Who is the guy to interview to get this out of the way?'"

"The problem I have is you don't really abide by the Rooney Rule the correct way," he said.

Many remember him as Fez in the popular sitcom, ?That 70?s Show?, but nowadays actor and activist Wilmer Valderrama has moved forward becoming more than just the shadow behind the funny character.

Beyond his participation in the Fox? successful TV show, the actor, just in the past year, has starred in more than six different TV series, NBC ?s ?Awake? and Fox? ?Raising Hope? begin some of the most prominent.

In the big screen he has also made a name for himself in films like ?From Prada to Nada? and ?Larry Crowne.?

Born in Miami from Colombian and Venezuelan parents but rised between Venezuela and the United States, Valderrama has made sure to keep himself relevant both in the entertainment industry and in the political arena, which he has entered in recent years, through his Latino roots.

?I think it?s, to me, that struggle and that drive that my dad had when I was growing up that really made me understand that we were here to do one thing. And that was to work and to maximize the opportunities that we had,? said the actor to NBC Latino. ?Go to those days makes me appreciate so much more, makes me even more hungry to do more.?

The activist, who serves as a spokesperson for This Shirt Helps, an initiative created to provide aid to different causes, has also worked hard as a co-founder of Voto Latino, an organization dedicated to bringing new and diverse voices into the political process.

Most recently, he was also part of the Latino inauguration celebration in Washington DC, where he hosted along with actress Rosario Dawson.

?I see a future politician here. Wilmer, when you choose to run, make sure I am on your campaign,? said Dawson after his speech.

To celebrate Wilmer Valderrama's 33th birthday, and take some time to remember and just laugh, we have put together a gallery above of some of his best moments as Fez in ?That 70?s Show?.
