Adult diabetes drug may work in very obese youths

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A drug originally approved to treat adults with diabetes may also help severely obese youths lose some weight, according to a new study.

"We're encouraged by these trial results because there is potentially a role for this class (of drugs) to be useful in terms of weight reduction and cardiovascular risk control," said Aaron Kelly, the study's lead author from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis.

Exenatide, which is marketed by Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. as Byetta, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2005 to boost production of the hormone insulin in adults with type 2 diabetes. People with the disease do not produce enough of the hormone, or their body is resistant to it.

The drug, which is injected in a person's belly twice a day and costs about $2,000 per year, was also found to reduce body weight by slowing down how quickly food moves through the body, which gives a person the feeling of being fuller longer.

The researchers write that there are few treatments available for severely obese children outside of lifestyle changes and surgery, and they wanted to see if the weight loss seen in adults would also happen in children.

For the new study, Kelly, who also works at Amplatz Children's Hospital, and his colleagues recruited severely obese participants between 12 and 19 years old from around Minnesota, and separated them into two groups.

Between 4 percent and 6 percent of American youths under 18 years of age are severely obese, according to the authors, who published their study in JAMA Pediatrics on Monday.

Severe obesity in children is classified as a body mass index (BMI), a measurement of weight in relation to height, of 35 or more on the adult scale. That's the BMI of a 12-year-old girl who is five feet tall and 155 pounds.

One group of 12 youths injected themselves with exenatide before breakfast and dinner every day for three months. The other group of 10 youths injected themselves with an inactive placebo.

At the start of the study, the participants in both groups had an average BMI of about 43. But, at the end of the three months, the BMI of the youths in the exenatide group fell to about 41, while the BMI of the placebo group fell to about 42.

That meant that on average, the group taking exenatide lost about 7 pounds more than the placebo group.

The researchers then started giving exenatide to all of the participants for another three months. After that time, the group that started out taking the drug ended up with a 4 percent lower BMI, compared to those who started out taking the placebo.

NOT APPROVED FOR CHILDREN

While the results were modest, Dr. Ronald Williams, head of the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital Weight Management Program in Hershey, Pennsylvania, said the weight loss could stack up over a few years.

"If that is a sustained effect over a few years, that's great," said Williams, who was not involved with the new research.

Kelly, who's received research funding from Amylin, which supplied both exenatide and the placebo for the study, told Reuters Health that the results of the new study jibe with an earlier trial they conducted. They are also in line with other obesity drugs, including orlistat (marketed as Xenical and Alli) and metformin.

Kelly said the most common side effects from exenatide were headaches, diarrhea and vomiting.

But both Williams and Kelly said parents and their children should not expect to get exenatide right now, because it is not approved for use in children for weight loss and will most likely not be paid for by insurance.

"We're really viewing this as preliminary evidence for this general drug class. We wouldn't recommend this medication to be used (for weight loss in youths) at this point," said Kelly.

A man who was beaten and dragged naked across the ground during a demonstration on Friday told the public prosecution that Egyptian riot police were responsible for the incident, reversing an earlier statement in which he blamed demonstrators.

A video of Hamada Saber, 48, being beaten with truncheons by helmeted police has infuriated the opposition, which accuses President Mohamed Morsi of ordering a harsh crackdown on protests two years after the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Mr. Morsi's government has announced an investigation into the incident, which came at the end of eight days of violent protests that saw nearly 60 people killed, the deadliest unrest of his seven months in office.

The state news agency MENA said late on Sunday that Mr. Saber "had amended his earlier testimony during the investigation, in which he had exonerated the police."

State television had aired overnight a recording of Saber, lying on bed in the police hospital, giving his account of the incident, in which he blamed protesters for stripping and robbing him.

Footage shows police beating

However, the widely seen footage clearly showed police beating him with truncheons and dragging him naked across a road.

Saber said he had seen a crowd running and then felt himself shot in the leg.

"I fell over, I failed to stand up again, then they surrounded me in a circle and attacked me," he said. The interviewer asked if he was referring to the demonstrators, and he answered: "Yes I am. They took my clothes off, maybe they were looking for money in my pockets. Then someone among them shouted: 'He is not a soldier. He is not a soldier, he is an old man and you are going to kill him.'

"The soldiers ran towards me. I was afraid of them, but they were saying, 'We will not beat you'. I swear to God this is what happened. I kept on running. They said again: 'Do not be afraid.' I kept running away and they said, 'We are exhausted because of you'."

Egypt's?prosecutors' office earlier released a statement saying Saber denied that police had hit him. That statement was received angrily by the opposition which suspected the authorities of intimidating him to exonerate the police.

"That a citizen be dragged in a public space is a crime against humanity. That he be forced to amend his testimony before the Public Prosecution is tyranny. It has dire consequences for justice," Nasser Amin, a prominent lawyer and campaigner for judicial independence said on Twitter.

The prosecutor heading the Heliopolis district in which the case is being investigated ordered that Saleh be moved to a public hospital instead of the police hospital in which he is currently being treated, MENA said.

PUA Explains What Girls Find Attractive in Guys | Anti-Feminist ...

PUA and practical ?game? seems to me to boil down to how to project confidence when interacting with females. Anything much beyond that and the PUA is either up his own ass, trying to sell you something, or at best, telling you how to spend hours mastering a technique that might up your 1 in 50 success rate to 1 in 49.

My biggest problem with following the PUA lifestyle is squaring the requirement of confidence being crucial to making her gina tingle, with the avoidance of turning into a desensitised brute after repeated rejections. Posessing confidence might not be strictly identical to being a ?bad boy?, but in order to maintain one?s ?state? after multiple rejections when gaming, I can?t see any other route but to become utterly disinterested in what a female thinks ? in other words, just see her as another pussy that you are trying to get into.

This relates to another common theme on this blog ? the Trauma Myth as a justification for draconian punishments for men who break statutory rape laws and other feminist sex rules. A man is committing a heinous act which deserves to be punished mercilessly if he has sex with a girl a day under the age of consent, because such a girl will be ?traumatised? for life as a result of being ?abused?. In particular, this trauma is often said to entail that the abuse victim will find it ?difficult to maintain relationships? in the future.

Fair enough, if this is an inevitable or even likely consequence of such crimes, then the man does indeed deserve to be punished harshly. But something I?ve never understood is what this supposed subsequent inability to maintain relationships means. For a man has to take the initiative in virtually every stage of a relationship and the pursuit of the opposite sex. And his likelihood of success in securing and maintaining any kind of sexual relationship, as PUAs tell us, is mostly down to confidence. The woman essentially just has to decide whether or not to open her legs, sleep with him, live with him, stick with him etc. In other words, in terms of being able to maintain relationships and have a successful love life, the psychology of a man is far more fragile and essential than that of a woman or a girl.

If the Trauma Myth was true, and the real basis of feminst sex laws, then in a fair world, when a female sadistically rejects an approach from a male, where the level of rejection far exceeds that which is required to express disinterest and ?NO?, and whose apparent purpose is to harm the man?s self-confidence and ability to approach women in future, then she should be guilty of a crime as serious as a sexual assault or sex with a minor. She is deliberately harming a man?s ability to succeed with other women. There is little ambiguity about that malicious intention, whereas when a man sexually assaults a woman, or has sex with an underage girl, the intention is rarely to actually harm the female, but simply to obtain illicit sexual satisfaction. Furthermore, in most cases of these inflated feminist definitions of abuse, the resulting ?harm?, especially the ?inability to have relationships?, is largely speculative and unproven (aside from femi junk science), and probably a result of being labelled and victimised by the abuse industry if it does occur.

As relates to practical PUA advice for the beginner (as I am, after a long time away from ?game?), the important lesson is to go slowly and progress at your own level, building confidence gradually and realistically. A popular technique is to begin by asking women for the time, or for directions, before slowly graduating to making real approaches.? If you?re really short of self-confidence, it would probably be better to avoid approaching women in the street altogether until you have sorted out your underlying confidence issues.? The possibility of encountering a sadistic bitch who will take pleasure in ?scarring you? is just too great (the possibility of this is even higher if you make the mistake when a sensitive beginner of approaching girls in pairs or in groups).

Hi, could I make a DSO agent as well as a BSAA agent? They'll be sisters.

I really don't want people to have 2 same-sex characters, I like to keep it gender equal and right now I've got an even male:female ratio. But you're welcome to make a pair of siblings if you wish.

EDIT: Or wait till other players have submitted their characters before you go ahead and make another female.

Seems lovely, especially for us who looooove the RE series.
A medic on the team, would that fit in ? I mean, of cause he would be able to fight, just not as well as the other fellas, but still I think you see where I am going. If not then I could always make another character xD

I'm sure for this particular mission the squad would need a Medic in the unit so go right ahead. :)

Wall Street fairy tale? Bull market may hit a snag

Wall Street's current jubilant narrative is that a rush into stocks by small investors has sparked a "great rotation" out of bonds and into equities that will power the bull market to new heights.

That sounds good, but there's a snag: The evidence for this is a few weeks of bullish fund flows that are hardly unusual for January.

Late-stage bull markets are typically marked by an influx of small investors coming late to the party - such as when your waiter starts giving you stock tips. For that to happen you need a good story. The "great rotation," with its monumental tone, is the perfect narrative to make you feel like you're missing out.

Even if something approaching a "great rotation" has begun, it is not necessarily bullish for markets. Those who think they are coming early to the party may actually be arriving late.

The stock market may have packed much of its fun for the year into one exhilarating January.

The market charged to its best start in decades even though the U.S. economy and corporate profits haven't broken out of a three-year pattern of slow, steady improvement despite record-low interest rates and billions of dollars of stimulus and tax cuts.

This steady growth will likely make for a good year for stocks, but January may account for much of the year's rise, analysts think.

"We thought this was going to be a good year for equities, we just didn't think we'd get it all in the first month," says Barry Knapp, head of U.S. equity strategy at Barclays Capital. "I'd love for the market to keep going up but when I look forward I see a lot of headwinds."

Investors pumped $20.7 billion into stocks in the first four weeks of the year, the strongest four-week run since April 2000, according to Lipper. But that pales in comparison with the $410 billion yanked from those funds since the start of 2008.

"I'm not sure you want to take a couple of weeks and extrapolate it into whatever trend you want," said Tobias Levkovich, chief U.S. equity strategist at Citigroup. "We have had instances where equity flows have picked up in the last two, three, four years when markets have picked up. They've generally not been signals of a continuation of that trend."

The S&P 500 rose 5 percent in January, its best month since October 2011 and its best January since 1997, driving speculation that retail investors were flooding back into the stock market.

Heading into another busy week of earnings, the equity market is knocking on the door of all-time highs due to positive sentiment in stocks, and that can't be ignored entirely. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> ended the week about 4 percent from an all-time high touched in October 2007.

Next week will bring results from insurers Allstate and The Hartford , as well as from Walt Disney , Coca-Cola Enterprises and Visa .

But a comparison of flows in January, a seasonal strong month for the stock market, shows that this January, while strong, is not that unusual. In January 2011 investors moved $23.9 billion into stock funds and $28.6 billion in 2006, but neither foreshadowed massive inflows the rest of that year. Furthermore, in 2006 the market gained more than 13 percent while in 2011 it was flat.

Strong inflows in January can happen for a number of reasons. There were a lot of special dividends issued in December that need reinvesting, and some of the funds raised in December tax-selling also find their way back into the market.

During the height of the tech bubble in 2000, when retail investors were really embracing stocks, a staggering $42.7 billion flowed into equities in January of that year, double the amount that flowed in this January. That didn't end well, as stocks peaked in March of that year before dropping over the next two-plus years.

Mom and Pop still wary
Arguing against a 'great rotation' is not necessarily a bearish argument against stocks. The stock market has done well since the crisis. Despite the huge outflows, the S&P 500 has risen more than 120 percent since March 2009 on a slowly improving economy and corporate earnings.

This earnings season, a majority of S&P 500 companies are beating earnings forecast. That's also the case for revenue, which is a departure from the previous two reporting periods where less than 50 percent of companies beat revenue expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Meanwhile, those on the front lines say mom and pop investors are still wary of equities after the financial crisis.

"A lot of people I talk to are very reluctant to make an emotional commitment to the stock market and regardless of income activity in January, I think that's still the case," said David Joy, chief market strategist at Columbia Management Advisors in Boston, where he helps oversee $571 billion.

Joy, speaking from a conference in Phoenix, says most of the people asking him about the "great rotation" are fund management industry insiders who are interested in the extra business a flood of stock investors would bring.

He also pointed out that flows into bond funds were positive in the month of January, hardly an indication of a rotation.

Citi's Levkovich also argues that bond investors are unlikely to give up a 30-year rally in bonds so quickly. He said stocks only began to see consistent outflows 26 months after the tech bubble burst in March 2000. By that reading it could be another year before a serious rotation begins.

On top of that, substantial flows continue to make their way into bonds, even if it isn't low-yielding government debt. January 2013 was the second best January on record for the issuance of U.S. high-grade debt, with $111.725 billion issued during the month, according to International Finance Review.

Bill Gross, who runs the $285 billion Pimco Total Return Fund, the world's largest bond fund, commented on Twitter on Thursday that "January flows at Pimco show few signs of bond/stock rotation," adding that cash and money markets may be the source of inflows into stocks.

Indeed, the evidence suggests some of the money that went into stock funds in January came from money markets after a period in December when investors, worried about the budget uncertainty in Washington, started parking money in late 2012.

Data from iMoneyNet shows investors placed $123 billion in money market funds in the last two months of the year. In two weeks in January investors withdrew $31.45 billion of that, the most since March 2012. But later in the month money actually started flowing back.
