Attachment Theory ? Better Sex Blog

Barbara Gross, LMSW

?

Attachment theory is the best way to understand love and romantic relationships. ?Pioneered by psychologist John Bowlby in the 1950?s, the field of attachment posits that each of us behaves in relationships in one of three distinct ways: Anxious ? people are often preoccupied with their relationships and tend to worry about their partners ability to love them back; Avoidant ? people equate intimacy with a loss of independence and constantly try to minimize closeness; Secure ? people feel comfortable with intimacy and are usually warm and loving. Also central to the science of attachment is the discovery that our need to be in close relationships is embedded in our genes; so contrary to what many relationship experts today may tell us about the importance of remaining emotionally self-sufficient, attachment research shows us that our need for a secure bond with our partner (or a caregiver) is essential.? This is from the book Attached: The new science of adult attachment and how it can help you find-and keep-love,?by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller. I like this book because it makes attachment theory and it how it affects all of us fairly easy to understand.

?

I see attachment issues most clearly manifest in my work with couples at the Center. Through the process of therapy I help couples see their attachment styles and hopefully more securely attach to one another. They often come to me because their issues have manifested sexually.?? Through our work together, their sexual issues often become the door through which we walk to a more secure attachment.? The work is so powerful because an individual, through becoming more securely attached, can move from one style to another. An anxious or avoidant person can become securely attached and thrive in their relationship and in their life. I find that to be a very?profound process to be a part of.

Why Apple Cannibalized The iPod - Business Insider

Remember the iPod? It just observed its 11th birthday Tuesday, though few noticed.

When Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, it wasn't trying to create a huge new business as much as it was looking to protect its vital iPod franchise.

In the last three months of 2007, Apple sold nearly $4 billion worth of iPods?42 percent of its total revenues. iPhones were 2.5 percent of the total.

Fast forward nearly five years, and iPod sales have shrunk below $1 billion for the first time?2.3 percent of Apple's revenues, two-thirds of which now come from iPhones and iPads.

In retrospect, the iPhone launched as Apple was achieving peak iPod sales?about 22 million units. It was exactly the right time for Apple to cannibalize its own business.

One might ask why Apple's still bothering. Well, for one, the iPod is still a multibillion-dollar business line.

For another, the iPod brings younger, poorer consumers into Apple's orbit, keeping them locked to their libraries of iTunes songs and App Store downloads.

And despite the name, the iPod Touch is the real miniature iPad, the iPhone minus the phone. For users, the lines between Apple's gadgets are not as clear as the company's financials would suggest.

May we suggest a new name: the iPad Nano?

Glenn Miller Orchestra at Del Norte High on Nov. 4 - Pomerado News

The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra brings their legendary sound to the Del Norte High School Performing Arts Center for two performances Sunday, Nov. 4. A matinee performance at 2 p.m. will be followed by an evening performance at 6 p.m. The concert is a fundraiser for the Del Norte High School music program.

The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra will perform two concerts on Sunday, Nov. 4 at Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch. Tickets are on sale online.

The concerts will be held at the Del Norte High School Performing Arts Center, 16601 Nighthawk Lane in 4S Ranch. Tickets are $25 to $50 and can be purchased online at http://dnhsmusic.org.

The orchestra?s namesake Glenn Miller was the famed bandleader of the Big Band swing era. Miller formed his orchestra in 1938. Striving to differentiate himself from the other big bands of the day, he developed a unique sound by having clarinet and tenor saxophone play a song?s melodic line in unison while three other saxophones provided backing harmony. He is fondly remembered for his iconic recordings of ?In the Mood,? ?Chattanooga Choo Choo,? ?Moonlight Serenade,? and ?Pennsylvania 6-5000,? and as well as many other well-known standards.

Miller traveled extensively during World War II to entertain the troops, providing relief and moral support to millions of soldiers. He was declared missing in action in 1944 when his plane disappeared over the English Channel in bad weather.

The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra was established by the Miller estate to honor and promote his legacy. The orchestra has toured consistently, performing an average of 300 shows a year throughout the world. Home Security: Wireless Security Lighting System | Home ...

Wireless Security Lighting SystemThere are many home security and monitoring systems for a home owner to choose from when they want ultimate security for their family, and the home. Depending on the size of the home, the land and lot it sits on, and how much security you are looking for as a home owner, many newer systems include wireless systems that include lighting and motion sensor detection. These systems are going to work with LED motion sensor lighting, and will protect the home, the perimeter, and the entire property space that your home sits on, to ensure intruders or unexpected or unwanted guests, do not make their way in.

Depending on the brand name of the home monitoring and home security system, and depending on the price you are willing to spend on the new security system, there are a number of systems that come with wireless security built in via lighting systems. These motion sensored devices are going to provide the home with:
- motion sensor protection (up to 360 degree rotation to ensure no one gets in);
- additional alarm signals when an intruder might be lurking if the motion lights catch them;
- coverage base (anywhere from as little as 5 feet up to 50 feet or more, depending on the brand of the system you purchase, and the size of your property);
- built in wireless cameras to ensure intruders can?t get in; and,
- several other built in security features, depending on the system you purchase when deciding on the new home intrusion and home security system you are going to purchase for the home.

Although not all home owners will opt for this light monitoring system, it is one more built in security measure that many home owners will choose to go with when purchasing the new system of choice to protect their family, property, and home. It is a great additional feature, in the event another monitoring device goes down, or if one of the other cameras goes down in the home security system, this wireless lighting system is going to provide one more alternate to stop intruders, and to keep your home as safe as possible.

The price range for the systems is going to depend on:
- the brand;
- the length of the monitoring light (and how far out it can cover your property);
- the power and clarity of the wireless cameras; and,
- the overall guarantee that it provides to home owners, who do choose to purchase these home security systems to keep their home, family, and property as safe as possible, at all times of the day, whether or not anyone is home.

When choosing the new monitoring systems, there are several to choose from. If you are a home owner who wants one added security measure, and wants to ensure your home is always as safe as it can be, and that your family is always protected, then you may want to consider a monitoring and intrusion system that does include the wireless security lighting system when purchasing a new home security system.

5 Foods that Detox - Shape Magazine

Sick of feeling sluggish, tired, and bloated? Want to get that hot bod into pristine shape? Well, a detox might be for you, says author and chef Candice Kumai. ??If you're not ready to fully commit to a detox yet, you can still try to modify your diet to help. Try cutting carbs, alcohol, dairy, sugar, and caffeine from your current diet, and start adding in these top five foods to feel completely renewed:

Tea: The polyphenols in tea leaves help to detoxify the body naturally, while popular herbal "detox" teas contain a blend of herbs with special detoxification and cleansing properties. Herbal and detoxification teas don't usually tend to carry caffeine.

Cabbage: A natural diuretic that is used to help expel excess fluids in the body, cabbage is made up of approximately 92 percent water. You'd probably burn more calories chewing cabbage than anything else. It's also known for being a perfect source of many dietary fiber, minerals, and vitamins, including C, K, E, A, and folic acid.

Garlic: Ahhh yes, the superfood of the century, not to mention the one that you don't want to consume on your first or second hot date. So exclude garlic for dating, but include it for a great slammin' detox. Garlic can also help to lower your bad cholesterol, prevent cardiovascular disease and also help to de-stress.

Greens: The chlorophyll in these plant-based foods will rid the body of harmful environmental toxins, as well as aid the liver in detoxification. A blood cleanser and natural antibiotic, it also reduces blood fats, thinning the blood and lowering blood pressure.??

Water: Are you surprised? Don't be afraid to down a few cups in the morning, through the day, before any meal, and of course, during and after a workout. Water will help to flush your kidneys and liver and also hydrate your body from head to toe. Plus, it's free! Here's to a happy and healthy new, cleansed you!

Panetta: Not enough early Benghazi intel

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. military did not quickly intervene during the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya last month because military leaders did not have adequate intelligence information and felt they should not put American forces at risk, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday.

In his most extensive comments to date on the unfolding controversy surrounding the attack in Benghazi, Panetta said U.S. forces were on heightened alert because of the anniversary of 9/11 and prepared to respond. But, he said, the attack happened over a few hours and was over before the U.S. had the chance to know what was really happening.

"(The) basic principle is that you don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on; without having some real-time information about what's taking place," Panetta told Pentagon reporters. "And as a result of not having that kind of information, the commander who was on the ground in that area, Gen. Ham, Gen. Dempsey and I felt very strongly that we could not put forces at risk in that situation."

Panetta was referring to Gen. Carter Ham, the head of U.S. Africa Command, and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In a letter to President Barack Obama Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner questioned if the White House considered military options during or immediately after the attack, and he questioned what the president knew about the security threats in the country. He said that the national debate over the incident shows that Americans are concerned and frustrated about the administration's response to the attack.

"Can you explain what options were presented to you or your staff, and why it appears assets were not allowed to be pre-positioned, let alone utilized? If these reports are accurate, the artificial constraint on the range of options at your disposal would be deeply troubling," Boehner wrote.

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack, which has become a heated campaign issue less than two weeks before the election. Republicans have criticized the Obama administration's failure to more quickly acknowledge that intelligence suggested very early on that it was a planned terrorist attack, rather than spontaneous violence erupting out of protests over an anti-Muslim film.

House and Senate Republicans as well as presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have criticized President Barack Obama and administration officials over the response to the attack and whether officials failed to provide enough security at the consulate.

And there have been ongoing questions about whether there should have been additional military forces sent to the consulate immediately after it became clear that the Americans were under attack.

During a news conference, Panetta lamented the "Monday morning quarterbacking" that has been going on about how the U.S. handled the attack. And Dempsey, sitting alongside Panetta, bristled at questions about what the military did or did not do in the aftermath.

Noting that there are reviews already going on, Dempsey added, "It's not helpful, in my view, to provide partial answers. I can tell you, however, sitting here today, that I feel confident that our forces were alert and responsive to what was a very fluid situation."

The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has announced it will hold a closed hearing Nov. 15 into the circumstances surrounding the terrorist attack, including the intelligence and security situation there, and additional hearings will follow.

Steel giant Posco's Q3 profit triples following cost cuts & currency gains - The China Post

Consolidated net profit in the July-September period rose to 723 billion won (US$656 million) from 229 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a statement.

But sales fell 7.2 percent year-on-year to 15.74 trillion won and operating profit dropped 17.6 percent to 1.06 trillion won.

The world's third-largest steelmaker by output has streamlined its business lineup and boosted sales of high-end products to cope with oversupply of steel and slowing demand.

Posco said the won's appreciation also helped drive down its dollar-denominated debts in the period. The South Korean unit, which hit a 13-month high against the greenback on Tuesday, has been boosted by foreign inflows as dealers look to Asia for better investment returns.

Syria undecided on ceasefire proposal, rebels divided

BEIRUT/CAIRO (Reuters) - Syria said on Wednesday its military command was still studying a proposal for a holiday ceasefire with rebels - contradicting international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi's announcement that Damascus had agreed to a truce.

The statement threw Brahimi's efforts to arrange a pause in the bloodshed in Syria into even more confusion, as divided rebel groups fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad gave mixed messages.

The prominent Farooq Brigade, which operates out of the battered city of Homs, said it would cease fire. The Islamist militant Al Nusra Front rejected the truce, saying it is not a group "who accepts to play such dirty games."

A previous ceasefire arrangement in April collapsed within days, with both sides accusing the other of breaking it.

Brahimi, the joint U.N.-Arab League special envoy, had crisscrossed the Middle East to push the warring factions and their international backers to agree to a truce during the upcoming Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha - a mission that included talks with Assad in Damascus at the weekend.

"After the visit I made to Damascus, there is agreement from the Syrian government for a ceasefire during the Eid," Brahimi told a news conference at the Arab League in Cairo.

Within an hour, Syria's Foreign Ministry said the proposal was still being studied by the military commanders. "The final position on this issue will be announced tomorrow," a ministry statement said. Brahimi later told the United Nations Security Council that Assad himself accepted the truce.

The holiday starts on Thursday and lasts three or four days. Brahimi did not specify the precise time period for a truce.

Nor did the initiative include plans for international observers, and rebel sources had earlier told Reuters there was little point if it could not be monitored or enforced.

Assad's forces and rebels are now locked in a battle with huge potential ramifications in the northwest.

Syrian warplanes carried out bombing raids on Wednesday on the strategic northern town of Maarat al-Numan and nearby villages while rebels surrounded an army base to its east, an activist monitor said.

Five people from one family, including a child and a woman, were killed in the air strikes, according to Rami Abdelrahman, head of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Maarat al-Numan has fallen to the rebels, effectively cutting the main north-south highway, a strategic route for Assad to move troops from the capital Damascus to Aleppo, Syria's largest city where the insurgents have taken a foothold.

But without control of the nearby Wadi al-Daif military base, their grip over the road is tenuous and the rebels say the ferocity of counter-attacks by government forces shows how important holding the base is to Assad's military strategy.

CHILDREN KNIFED

More than 32,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which began with peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations in March 2011 and then mushroomed into civil war as repression increased.

On Wednesday, opposition activists and Syrian state media traded blame for the killing of at least 25 people, including women and children, in the town of Douma near Damascus.

"People now are scared and very angry. Some of the martyrs were killed with knives, others were shot," Mahmoud Doumany, an activist living in Douma, told Reuters.

Syrian state television said 25 people had been killed by "terrorist members of the so-called 'Liwa al-Islam.'"

Opposition video showed the bodies of women and children, one of whom had a hole in his head.

"God is great," said a man off screen, his voice trembling as he walked around the house, filming bodies on several floors of a residential building.

REFUGEES FLEE BOMBARDMENTS

Hundreds of Syrian refugees have poured into a makeshift refugee camp at Atimah overlooking the Turkish border, fleeing a week of what they said were the most intense army bombardments since the uprising began.

"Some of the bombs were so big they sucked in the air and everything crashes down, even four-storey buildings. We used to have one or two rockets a day, now for the past 10 days it has become constant, we run from one shelter to another. They drop a few bombs and it's like a massacre," one refugee, a 20-year-old named Nabil, told Reuters at the camp.

The army relies on air power and heavy artillery to push back the rebels.

Human Rights Watch said the Syrian air force had increased its use of cluster bombs across the country in the past two weeks. The New York-based organization identified, through activist video footage of unexploded bomblets, three types of cluster bombs which had fallen on and around Maarat al-Numan.

Cluster bombs explode in the air, scattering dozens of smaller bomblets over an area the size of a sports field. Most nations have banned their use under a convention that became international law in 2010, but which Syria has not signed.

In contrast to the Libya crisis last year, the West has shown little appetite to arm the Syrian rebels, worried that weapons would fall into the hands of Islamic militants.

Russia, which has backed Assad through the conflict, sold his government $1 billion worth of weapons last year and has made clear it would oppose an arms embargo in the U.N. Security Council.

Flights disrupted at Heathrow and London City airports as another foggy morning causes transport nightmare

  • Heathrow Airport forced to cancel 49 flights
  • Met Office says conditions do not warrant a severe weather warning

By Anna Edwards

|

Fog and cloud across the UK has left hundreds of travellers stranded this morning for a second day in a row.

Fog affected flights and train journeys as Britain was cloaked in a light fog, but the Met Office said that they were not issuing a severe weather warning as the impact was not widespread.

The poor visibility led to disrupted flights at London City Airport, and 54 flights were cancelled at Heathrow Airport in west London.

Passengers faced more delays at Terminal 5, Heathrow, as the airport operated on reduced capacity because of foggy conditions

A spokesman for Heathrow said: 'Fog and low cloud mean there?s reduced visibility for pilots and air traffic controllers at Heathrow.

'Drivers have to leave extra space in these conditions and aircraft are no different, which makes it impossible to maintain Heathrow?s normal pattern of a plane landing or taking off every 45 seconds.?

'Because Heathrow is full, operating at more than 99 per cent of permitted runway capacity, there are no gaps in the schedule that can be used for delayed flights.

'Unfortunately that makes some cancellations inevitable.

Stansted remained open and operated all flights, despite the adverse weather conditions.

A spokesman said: 'We actually took in an additional 34 diverts from other airports, mainly City, Luton and Southend on Monday.'

On the railways, there were delays to CrossCountry and South West Trains (SWT) services in Hampshire due to a broken-down freight train in the Eastleigh area.

SWT passengers also had to contend with delays due to a broken-down train at Beaulieu Road in Hampshire which led to hold-ups between Southampton Central and Brockenhurst.

On London Midland, passengers were warned to expect possible cancellations due to train crew shortages, while First Great Western services were affected by a broken-down train at Greenford in west London.

On the Underground, there were delays during the rush-hour to Metropolitan and Jubilee line services due to a faulty train at Wembley Park in north west London.

The Met Office said: 'It's mostly misty, cloudy and drizzling. Temperatures are up to 16 degrees and will stay pretty much the same for tomorrow, with lots of cloud.

'There was a severe weather warning yesterday through until this morning. As visibility is not limited to 200 metres and there is not a wide impact, we have not issued another one.'

The poor weather came as thick mist caused havoc yesterday, forcing flights to be cancelled across the UK's airports.

The affects of the heavy fog was felt across Europe, including in Poland where planes due to land at Warsaw airports were redirected to neighbouring cities or were forced to wait for the fog to temporarily dissipate before landing, airport authorities said.

The Met Office? issued a 17-hour severe weather alert in the South, Midlands and North of England as visibility dropped to 50metres on hills because of the fog.

Famous skylines across the capital were totally obscured by the thick fog, but the weather is expected to warm up before a cold snap greets the country by the end of the week.

Vietnam prime minister admits mismanaging economy

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) ? Vietnam's embattled prime minister acknowledged Monday that he had mismanaged the country's slumping economy, and he pledged to push forward with difficult reforms of bloated state-owned enterprises.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made the remarks at the opening of the national assembly, three-quarters of the way through what is turning out to be a rough year for a Southeast Asian nation once touted as an emerging "tiger" economy. As foreign ambassadors looked on from the balcony, Dung was able to claim credit for stabilizing inflation, but listed a series of economic failings.

"There are enormous challenges," he said to the 500 parliamentarians, more than 90 percent of whom are members of the Communist Party. "Public dissatisfaction persists."

The growth of Vietnam's once-booming economy has slowed to around 5 percent this year. It has been dragged down by the country's corruption-prone and inefficient state-owned industries, which have borrowed heavily from banks and have been unable to turn a profit.

With credit drying up within the country, businesses have been unable to invest, and the global economic slowdown has taken its toll on exports.

Dung, a little more than one-year into his second five-year term, was publicly rebuked last week by the Communist Party following a meeting of its central committee. Some reports suggested that he had survived a leadership challenge.

In his speech, he hit out blogs for reporting on rumors and the power struggles within the government, saying "hostile forces" were abusing the Internet to "slander" the government. International rights groups say Dung has overseen a crackdown on freedom of expression in the country.

Dung said he took personal responsibility for heavy losses run up by Vinashin and Vinalines, two state-owned shipping companies. He pledged that reforms aimed at cutting those and other state-owned companies down to size will speed up in 2013.

Dung said Vietnam would need fourth-quarter economic grown of 6.5 percent to reach its target of 5.2 percent for the whole year. He predicted growth of 5.5 percent next year, with inflation at 8 percent.

ROMNEY WINS FINAL DEBATE | Weekly World News

Pundits on all major networks agree? Mitt Romney crushed President Obama in tonight?s final debate.

The final debate between President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Gov. Mitt Romney that took place at 9 p.m. Oct. 22nd in Boca Raton is over and? Mitt Romney absolutely demolished President Obama, according to all the mainstream media sources.

President Barack Obama dodged and weaved when trying to answer questions about Libya and the Mid East, while Mitt Romney remained calm and just told the audience, ?we can do better.?

President Obama was caught in numerous half-truths when he was trying to explain why the administration blamed the attack in Libya on a half-baked video by a crazy person.

?We are still looking into it,? the President reportedly told the audience. ??We should have an answer to what happened by 2016, after I?m out of office.?

?Mitt Romney won the election tonight,? said former Clinton adviser, ?Paul Begala.??According to my sources, President Obama will resign on November 6th and save the country from having to go through the expense of an election.?

Mitt Romney seemed at ease when talking about foreign policy. ?Look, China is screwing us over, so when I take office I think we should screw them back. ?Poland? ?I love sausage. ?England? ?A great place for a Mormon mission. ?Russia? ?My son is going to kick Putin?s a**..?

?President Obama looked like a little boy next to Mitt Romney,? said Rachel Maddow of MSNBC. ??I?m going to vote for Mitt.:

And in a surprising tweet, Bill Maher said, ?I think we should all vote for Romney and then in January.. the revolution begins!?

President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney were much more friendly toward each other for this debate. ?They were not as aggressive as last time, though Romney reportedly whispered to Obama, ?contradict me again and I?m going to kick your leg.?

Bob Schieffer of CBS moderated the debate. ? By all counts, he was better than Candy Crowley, but he also did help President Obama out whenever he could. ?In a discussion on Iran, Schieffer interrupted Romney to say, ??you?re flat-out wrong Governor, President Obama is not going to bomb Iran until after the election. ?And he may bomb Israel, too.?

Polls conducted by MSNBC showed that President Obama won the debate with a 99% of viewers calling Romney the winner and only 1% calling Obama the winner. ?But that 1% then donated over $30 million to the Obama campaign, led by George Clooney.

Survey: SMBs Remain Blissfully Unfazed by Cyberthreats | threatpost

More than three quarters of small business owners claim their companies are safe from cyber attacks, yet only 17 percent of those businesses have implemented a formal cybersecurity plan.

This is just one of many problems for small businesses in the digital realm,?according to a joint survey (.PDF) released by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and security firm Symantec this week.

SMB owners appear to be conscious of the ongoing threats and malware that affect their companies, yet remain largely unfazed by them. While approximately 75 percent of owners believe in a safe and trusted internet and that a safe online environment is necessary for success, of the roughly 1,000 small businesses nationwide that were polled in the survey, 66 percent are not concerned by cyber threats.

The report highlights a few other discrepancies, particularly a lack of preparedness when it comes to dealing within social media; 70 percent responded they do not have a social media security policy. Also, 87 percent of small businesses surveyed don?t have a written cybersecurity plan and 69 percent don?t have an Internet security policy.

In another part of the report, Visa Inc. claims that 90 percent of the payment data breaches disclosed to them are from small businesses. These findings are in line with?a survey conducted earlier this year that found that 85 percent of SMBs were convinced a data breach against their company was unlikely. Those survey results, similiar to this week?s, found that business owners were ill-prepared and that less than half of those polled adopted best practices to reduce the risk of an attack.

The NCSA/Symantec study was released as part of October?s National Cyber Security Awareness Month, an effort commissioned by the Obama administration and the Department of Homeland Security, currently in its ninth year.

'The Sessions' review: sex-surrogate story works better in bed than in church

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - On paper, it sounds like a misguided collaboration between the Lifetime network and the Playboy Channel - a 36-year-old paralytic who spends most of his time in an iron lung hires a sex surrogate to help him lose his virginity. Based on a true story, to boot.

Miraculously, "The Sessions" avoids the kind of squickyness that Hollywood usually drizzles over its uplifting movies about the physically challenged, mainly because its subject, poet and journalist Mark O'Brien, was in real life far too smart and self-deprecating for that kind of sentimental head-patting. (Just watch Jessica Yu's extraordinary Oscar-winning short "Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien" for a sampling of the actual guy's wit and forthrightness.)

In this fictionalized film, we see some news footage of O'Brien zipping through a college campus on a motorized gurney before we're introduced to John Hawkes playing the writer. Assigned an article about "Sex and the Disabled," O'Brien soon realizes he's in way over his head, given that, for all his intellectual growth, he's still a virgin. (A childhood polio sufferer, O'Brien was unable to move anything below his neck although, as we learn soon enough, he was more than capable of erections and orgasms.)

Along comes sex therapist and surrogate Cheryl (Helen Hunt) to teach Mark about his own body, not to mention the bodies of women; she makes it clear from the get-go that he is limited to no more than six sessions with her and that she has very strict boundaries regarding her private life. As you might expect, however, those boundaries start wobbling a bit, as the married Cheryl finds herself having feelings for Mark, even as she acknowledges that his crush on her is classic patient-therapist transference.

Since the movie's not about Cheryl, and we don't know how her sessions with Mark are different than the ones she's had with previous clients, we have to take it on faith that Mark is so very special as to make this professional bend her own rules. It's something of a leap, but Hawkes' charismatic performance helps fill in the gaps of the screenplay by director Ben Lewin. (The Australia-based filmmaker was himself a childhood polio sufferer.)

Given the obvious physical challenges of the role, Hawkes creates a memorable performance whose subtle pleasures will no doubt be blown all out of proportion by awards-distributing bodies that admire quantifiable acting. Despite the trophy-attracting nature of the role, however, Hawkes admirably avoids showboating.

He's got great chemistry with his co-stars, particularly Moon Bloodgood (dryly amusing as one of Mark's caretakers) and Hunt. The Oscar-winning actress often reads peevish and irritated on the screen, as though she had been called into work on her day off. Her anti-charisma works in her favor here, giving the character a prickly base from which to blossom into this unlikely flirtation. (It may have helped that Hunt explored similar territory in 1992's "The Waterdance," another movie in which her character had a sexual relationship with a paraplegic.)

Hunt deserves a lot of credit for tackling the necessary physicality of the role, particularly since so many actors, both male and female, insist on no-nudity contracts that protect their modesty but take audiences out of the movie.

Think about it: When you see a passionate love scene in which a woman leaves her bra on, or a naked actor walking through a room where there is always a lamp or a bouquet of flowers to hide his genitals, it removes you from the moment and reminds you that you're watching actors acting. There's nothing prurient about Hunt's nudity here, and it keeps the sexual scenes organic and believable; hats off to her for caring more about the character and the movie than she does about the inevitable ubiquity of her breasts on the internet.

The power of Hawkes' scenes with Hunt and Bloodgood is worth mentioning because where "The Sessions" goes awry is in the many instances in which Mark pours out his heart to parish priest Father Brendan (William H. Macy). It's a clunky way to communicate Mark's innermost feelings about his sexual education, and the whole "He's talking to a priest! About sex!" gag gets tired pretty quickly.

Still, the rest of the movie works so effectively that it makes the many church-bound scenes worth enduring. Smart films about sex are as rare as intelligent cinematic explorations of the lives of the differently-abled, so for "The Sessions" to accomplish both so well makes it the movie equivalent of Halley's Comet; take a good look, because it might be decades before we get another one.

Microsoft sells out of $499 Surface tablets

20 hrs.

Microsoft has only?been letting people pre-order the new Surface RT tablet since Wednesday, but the most popular configuration ? the entry-level $499 one ? appears to be sold out?already.

Now, if you attempt to pre-order the baseline Surface with Windows RT, a 32 GB device without the new Touch Cover accessory, you'll have to wait about three weeks for it to ship, according to Microsoft's website.?

Oddly enough, if you choose to buy the same model with a bundled keyboard Touch Cover (the?one whose ease of use came as "a pleasant surprise" to?our own Wilson Rothman), you can still get it on the original ship?date of Oct. 26.?Entry-level configurations ordered before the change to the delivery timeframe should ship on time.

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment on this shipment delay, of course. We'd certainly?love to know how many Surface RT tablets have been pre-ordered total?so far, especially considering that the company is rumored to have ordered enough parts to make three to five million Surface tablets in this quarter alone.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Boiling over | Local | News | The London Free Press

Vanessa Disbrowe did what we're all told to do. She stood up to a young bully picking on an even younger child in a park near her Toronto home. But that act, and the assault that followed, has changed her life.

"Because I knew the youth, I wanted to do something," said the 27-year-old mother of four.

"But I don't know if I was put in the situation again now, after what has happened, with the lack of action, if I would do it again."

The trouble started for Disbrowe in March when she and her children were at Driftwood Park close to their Tobermory Dr. home in Toronto's Jane-Finch area. Disbrowe and a friend noticed a nine-year-old neighbourhood girl being picked on by a larger girl. She estimates the girl stood about five-foot-five and weighed about 220 pounds.

"We told her, 'You shouldn't be bullying her' . . . We were just trying to get through to her . . . She started swearing at us and cussing us off."

Disbrowe's friend told the girl, "Just because you live in Jane and Finch doesn't mean you have to be a statistic."

"(The girl) paused for about five seconds," Disbrowe said.

"Then she picked up a handful of sand and threw it at me. She knocked me to the ground and started punching me."

Disbrowe, who had her 10-month-old daughter in her arms, managed to hand her child off to a neighbour who came to her aid. She wrapped her arms around the girl's legs and yelled for bystanders to call police.

Disbrowe said the girl bit her left arm, drawing blood.

When she heard people calling 911, she let go of the girl, who walked away with her friends.

The police arrived moments later as Disbrowe pursued the girl, not wanting her to get away.

"While the story was being told (to police) she was sitting there, mocking us with her friends," she said. "The police said there was nothing they could really do. Our stories sounded the same until the assault happens and that's when it gets different."

They told Disbrowe she could press charges if police didn't.

The officers said they were going to drive the girl home and talk to her parents. Disbrowe was taken to the hospital to treat cuts above her eye, a split lip and the bite wound. She sported a black eye for a week after the incident.

Since that day, Disbrowe said, the investigation hasn't moved and her efforts to press charges have been bogged down because the girl is younger than 18.

Several months passed and Disbrowe's husband Sam was talking to a Toronto police officer.

He explained their problem and asked for the officer's advice.

"He just looked at me and said 'You should move,' " Sam said.

"I looked at the guy and said, 'You've got to be kidding. Your answer to someone assaulting my wife and my child is that we should move because you guys can't do anything about it?' "

Disbrowe's anxiety over the attack grew.

"It got to the point I couldn't go outside," she said. "I'd see the girl on the street. Nothing was happening to her."

Tormented by memories of the attack, Disbrowe applied for a transfer from her criminology studies at York University to Western University. Since the family moved to London, Sam is out of work and they're struggling financially.

"It's screwed up a lot of things.

We've gone through all of our savings. But it's the inaction that really bugs me. I've called so many times."

Exclusive: Libyan Islamist says he was at U.S. consulate during attack

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - A Libyan militia commander who U.S. officials say is under investigation in connection with the attacks on the American consulate in Benghazi which led to the death of the ambassador said he was present during the incident but was not one of the ringleaders.

Some American newspapers have quoted unnamed Libyan officials as pointing to Ahmed Abu Khattala as the leader of the attacks on Sept, 11. The newspapers also reported that the officials said Abu Khattala's whereabouts were unknown.

U.S. government sources told Reuters that Abu Khattala is being investigated as a suspect in the Benghazi consulate attacks though U.S. investigators are not clear at this point if he played a role in leading or organizing the attacks.

The killings of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three colleagues in Benghazi have become a flashpoint in the U.S. election campaign, with Republicans seizing on the issue to accuse President Barack Obama of failed leadership.

In an interview, Abu Khattala told Reuters he had only heard he was a suspect through news media and was surprised that officials had told journalists he was at large.

"These reports say that no one knows where I am and that I am hiding," he said. "But here I am in the open, sitting in a hotel with you. I'm even going to pick up my sister's kids from school soon."

Sitting with a friend in the restaurant of a Benghazi hotel, the 41-year-old, sporting a red felt hat and a full salt-and-pepper beard, laughed gently.

A Libyan interior minister official close to the investigation told Reuters that a photograph was taken of Abu Khattala at the consulate at the time of the September 11 attacks but there was not enough evidence to arrest him.

"There were many people there from Ansar al-Shariah, from other brigades and from the general public," the official, who refused to be named, said, referring to the hardline Islamist militia group which has been blamed for the attack.

"Just because someone is there doesn't mean they were behind it."

Abu Khattala denied being a leader of Ansar al-Shariah, but said he was friendly with the group and knew its membership well.

A U.S. official said there may be more than person taking a lead role in the group.

"Ansar al-Shariah is a factionalized militant group without one home address," the official told Reuters. "There may be several military commanders playing a role in its activities."

Abu Khattala said that on the night of September 11, he received a phone call telling him that an attack on the U.S. consulate was in progress and that he then went to the scene.

"I arrived at the street parallel to the consulate and waited for other brigade leaders to show me the way to the buildings," he said. "I arrived at the scene just like the others did -- to see what was happening."

DENIES LEADING ATTACK

Abu Khattala denied sanctioning or leading the attack, but said he understood the anger which fuelled it.

A crudely made movie that mocks the Prophet Mohammad, filmed in California and circulated on the Internet, has helped generate violent protests across the Islamic world.

U.S. officials have said they believe militants used the protests as cover to carry out an armed assault on the U.S. diplomatic compound and a building that was supposed to be a safe house.

"The film which insulted the Prophet was a direct attack on our values and if America wants good relations with the Muslim world it needs to do so with respect," Abu Khattala said. "If they want to do it with force, they will be met with force."

He said that after he arrived at the consulate, he began to help direct traffic with other militia leaders.

"People were crashing into each other because of the chaos and there was sporadic shooting," he said.

Abu Khattala said he called the commanders of Benghazi's security forces -- the February 17 brigade and the Supreme Security Committee -- and told them to remove their cars and people from the consulate to avoid clashes.

"Soon after I made my calls, one of the guards told me that four men were detained in a building inside the compound who had been shooting at the demonstrators," he said.

"By the time I arrived at the building the men had already escaped. At that point I left the scene and didn't return."

Little is known about Abu Khattala, who hails from Benghazi.

Abu Khattala, who is unmarried, said he went to public schools in Libya but did not attend university or community college. He said he was imprisoned for a total of 10 years for "knowing suspected personalities". He refused to elaborate.

"I've also never left the country," he said when asked if he received any education or training abroad.

Abu Khattala said he formed the Obeidah al-Jarrah brigade at the beginning of the armed revolt which toppled Muammar Gaddafi last year.

The shadowy armed militia was blamed in the killing last July of military chief Abdelfattah Younes, a former Gaddafi loyalist who had defected to the rebels.

Younes was involved in the 1969 coup that brought Gaddafi to power. He was interior minister before he defected and took a senior position in the rebellion in February.

Some rebels, especially hard-line conservative Islamist fighters who were persecuted under Gaddafi, were never happy to serve under a man who had been so close to Gaddafi.

Abu Khattala was questioned by Libyan authorities but released because no evidence directly linked him to the killing. He said he later broke up his militia group.

"After the revolution Obeidah al-Jarrah was disbanded because we were a fighting group and the war was over in Benghazi," he said.

But many members of Obeidah al-Jarrah are known to have joined other brigades, including Ansar al-Shariah in Benghazi.

(This story corrects to show Abu Khattala is from Benghazi in paragraph 25)

Death's Companion

Oh God, words are so untrustworthy. And what is God, anyway? A fabricated construct created by the adults when I was a mere child? The artificial construction rooted so deep into my consciousness that it becomes almost impossible to reject? I don?t know. That?s the human condition in one phrase: I don?t know.

Life goes on. Life flows like a viscous liquid down a twisted slope until the blood inside our veins come to a stand still. Until we start decomposing back into the earth we came from. It would be foolish to believe stolidly in a theory of our creation or existence when infallible evidence is impossible. Then why continue deceiving ourselves? The only real meaning that remains is that there is no meaning. Logical and rational thinking points in that direction since no meaning can be ascertained of human life in the universe. We are just tiny particles like dust compared to the grand structure of the universe. It is simply vain to think that we could actually matter. And simply hilarious to think that we might actually have a purpose!

Does a mote of dust have any purpose?

Anyway, I am lying on a bed while I contemplate these thoughts. The room requires a thorough cleansing. The dust has so filled the corners that it has started to bother my sinuses. Plastic waste and bottles lay strewn on the floor. Images and memories flicker on the cobwebby ceiling. Spiders stare incredulously at my strange existence. Ants pay me no mind; they continue busily hoarding for food.

I hear the sound of young boys yelling outside. They still live. They are filled with an energy they themselves can?t understand. They are filled with life. In the room lying like a corpse, I am filled with death. In fact, I have become a companion of Death. Death was very pleased to find me. He said that every man he had ever met had died of fright, but I hadn?t even shuddered! I told him why should I be afraid of death, when I had defeated life? He had smiled at that, and had sat down beside me.

DeathToday he was visiting me again. He was seated on the armchair, smoking a long black pipe. I got up and slouched towards the window. The boys were wrestling on the grass, tackling each other to the ground. I lit myself a cigarette and inhaled deeply. ?What brings you here?? I asked conversationally.

Death avoided the question. ?You do know that if you continue smoking at that rate, I will have to take you away??

?Nah,? I smiled. ?You would be too bored if you took me away from this miserable world. Who would you talk to then??

?Ah, you are right,? sighed Death. ?I guess I will let you live till a hundred. Until then you will be begging to be taken away??

?You won?t find me begging. I will simply blow off my head the day life doesn?t seem worth living.?

?Ah yes, you could do that?.?

Death seemed to fall in a stupor. ?In fact, had a suicide case only last week. A lonely man hung himself in his flat out in Mumbai. I guess he didn?t have anyone to talk to?.?

I continued studying the kids roughhousing outside. I suddenly felt nostalgic for my own childhood. I puffed at my cigarette slowly.

Death seemed content to keep talking. ?Had a very strange case yesterday night. A woman added liberal amounts of poison in the dinner she was preparing and served it to the whole family. Found the entire family dead at the dinner table, the woman included.?

?Yeah, people do strange things?? I commented, as if the woman had only done something eccentric rather than murder her entire family.

?The parents? had died quickly. I guess they had ingested a large portion of the food. But the kids had suffered, puking their guts out on the carpet while slowly dying.?

Death lapsed into silence after this horrible confession. Even I was slightly shaken by the imagery Death?s words had formed in my mind. I pulled open a rickety drawer and drew out a bottle of whiskey. I gulped down the fiery liquid to calm my nerves. I realized Death had been stalling. He had not answered my first question. I didn?t want the answer anymore, but I was helpless. So I asked him again. ?What brings you around here today??

?Have a job to do,? Death replied tightly.

?Who?? I asked, feeling a sick sensation in the pit of my stomach. I had thought I had been beyond these feelings. Apparently I had been wrong.

Death took some time before answering. Uneasiness coiled inside me like a writhing snake. Finally he spoke, ?The fair one.?

If I could have seen his eyes, I was sure they would have been filled with remorse. But all I could see was blackness where eyes would have been.

I stared helplessly at the innocent kids playing outside. The fair boy stood out amongst his friends of darker countenance. He was very thin and he was running around laughing. I turned and pleaded to Death. ?Can?t you take me? In his place? The kid has barely lived for God?s sake!?

?You know, I can?t, Javed.? Death replied mournfully. ?Can?t alter the fates. Life must flow on in its destructive or fruitful path in this chaotic world. I just do what I have to do. Like all the rest.?

I remained silent. Perhaps because I couldn?t speak. The kids had floundered near to the road in their enthusiastic tussling. I wanted to shout a warning, but my throat had constricted painfully.

Then it happened. One of the boys pushed the smaller fair-skinned boy with more force than he had intended. The boy flew off his feet and fell down on the road. At the same instant a speeding car appeared. The driver, a teenager himself, was too late in applying the brakes. Perhaps he was drunk. Tires screeched; shrill screams rang in the air. The car hit the boy with a sick thumping sound of horrible finality.

I turned away from the window. More screams rent the air as doors started bursting open in the neighbourhood. People cascaded onto their lawns and stood as silent spectators. My heart had stopped thumping. My blood had gone cold. I sat down on the bed and took a long gulp from the bottle that I had forgotten I had been clutching.

Death pocketed his pipe and stood up slowly, taking his leave. He turned and disappeared from the room.

I sat and stared into the depths of wretched misery that we call life.

China's economic growth slows to 7.4 percent

BEIJING (AP) ? China's economic growth tumbled to the lowest in more than three years in the latest quarter but retail sales and investment improved in a possible sign a painful slump might be stabilizing.

The world's second-largest economy grew 7.4 percent in the three months ending in September, data showed Thursday. That was down from the previous quarter's 7.6 percent and the lowest since the first quarter of 2009.

Retail sales rose 14.4 percent, a small acceleration over the first half of the year, and investment in industrial assets and some other indicators also showed small improvements.

"Judging from the third quarter figures, we can see a clear sign of steady economic growth," said Sheng Laiyun, spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics, at a news conference. "There is a smaller margin of decline and some major indicators have been growing faster."

Analysts expect China's economic growth to rebound late this year or early next year but say a recovery is likely to be too weak to drive global growth without improvement in the United States and Europe.

The slowdown is due largely to government lending and investment controls imposed to cool an overheated economy and inflation. But the downturn worsened sharply last year after global demand for Chinese goods plunged unexpectedly.

The government has cut interest rates twice since early June and is injecting money into the economy through high investment by state companies and spending on building airports, subways and other public works. But authorities have avoided launching a massive stimulus after huge spending in response to the 2008 global crisis fueled inflation and a wasteful building boom.

Premier Wen Jiabao, the country's top economic official, said Wednesday growth appeared to be stabilizing and he expressed confidence the country can meet its official targets for the year. Wen gave no growth forecast or a possible time frame for a recovery.

"Economic growth is stabilizing and we are confident through our efforts we can achieve the full-year targets for economic and social development," the premier said in a Cabinet statement.
